Health, Wealth and Care group Australian Unity has completed the acquisition of Plena Healthcare Holdings Pty Ltd (Plena Healthcare) from Zenitas Healthcare Pty Ltd.
Plena Healthcare is a national provider of mobile allied health services within residential aged care and community settings, providing a combined approximate 758,000 hours of care to over 100,000 customers annually.

Now combined, Australian Unity’s Home Health business employs more than 6,700 people and will provide approximately 4,500,000 hours of care to some 160,000 customers per year. The Group’s overall employee complement is now more than 11,000.

Prue Bowden, Group Executive – Home Health, said that the acquisition of Plena Healthcare provides important scale to Australian Unity’s Home Health business, which will enable more Australians to live and age well in their preferred setting.

“We’re building a leading integrated healthcare company that responds to the needs of Australia’s ageing population and puts customers at the centre to deliver care where and when they want it.”

“Through the acquisition we have strategically diversified and enhanced our Home Health business to deliver mobile allied health services that can be scaled within our existing operations.”

“In this model, multidisciplinary teams will play a greater role in supporting independence, preventing hospitalisations and improving customer’s long-term wellbeing.”

Australian Unity’s Group Managing Director, Rohan Mead, noted Australia’s demographic shift remains one of the greatest challenges for the healthcare sector.

“The reality is that our current healthcare system is not designed for the future of ageing. Mutual organisations like Australian Unity have an important role to play to deliver vital and innovative solutions that are focused on the customer and broader community,” said Mr Mead.

Australian Unity was advised by Greenhill & Co., a Mizuho affiliate as financial adviser and King & Wood Mallesons as legal adviser.
