Australian Unity brings its membership card to Apple Wallet, enabling users to access their health insurance cards on their iPhone and Apple Watch

Australian Unity is enhancing its customer experience by enabling members to add their membership card to Apple Wallet on their iPhone and Apple Watch. This enables Australian Unity members to seamlessly make on-the-spot claims at any extras healthcare practice by holding their iPhone or Apple Watch near any HICAPS, CommBank or Tyro health insurance payment terminal in Australia.

Australian Unity customers can also pay for gap payments by seamlessly and securely using Apple Pay, creating a true digital wallet experience.

Rebecca Windsor, CEO of Private Health Insurance at Australia Unity, said this innovation directly responds to member demand for a more seamless and convenient claims process.

“With our Australian Unity membership card in Apple Wallet, claiming becomes as easy as selecting the card in Apple Wallet and simply holding an iPhone or Apple Watch at a terminal, eliminating the need for manual submissions or carrying a physical card,” Ms Windsor said.

“This aligns with our broader commitment to having 50 per cent of our member interactions conducted digitally by June 2025, offering a streamlined experience for our members.”

To add the Australian Unity membership card to Apple Wallet, users can:

  1. Download and open the Australian Unity Health iOS App.
  2. Head to the main menu and select the ‘Digital Card’ section.
  3. Tap 'Add to Apple Wallet' and follow the prompts.

For Apple Watch users, once the card has been added to iPhone, it will automatically sync to Apple Watch.

When members add their health insurance card, the customer identifier number is not shared with Apple. When the card is used, it is encrypted during transmission and only decrypted by the payment system before being passed to the insurer. Apple does not know when or where a member uses their card, and Apple does not receive any data related to the claim — ensuring a secure and private transaction.

This initiative is part of Australian Unity’s comprehensive digital strategy, which includes the recent launch of an upgraded Health Insurance App. With a focus on growth, operational efficiency, and enhanced member satisfaction, Australian Unity remains dedicated to delivering convenient, tech-driven solutions for its members.

“Our research shows that members want solutions that integrate seamlessly into their everyday lives,” Ms Windsor said. “The introduction of the Australian Unity membership card in Apple Wallet directly addresses these expectations, offering an easy and convenient way to manage claims and payments.”
