How do I apply for government assistance?

Applying is simple, and we’re here to help.

To access the government assistance programs, you’ll need to go through an assessment process to determine your care needs and eligibility. Here’s what you can expect: Give us a call: We can discuss your needs and provide guidance on the application process.

1. Give us a call: We can discuss your needs and provide guidance on the application process.
2. Initial referral: You’ll apply through My Aged Care. We can refer you directly to them to start the process.
3. Care Assessment: My Aged Care will organise a home visit to get to know you and your needs.
4. Receive your outcome: After this visit, you’ll receive an outcome letter of your assessment and eligibility.
5. Start receiving care: Once you receive this letter, call us and we will create a support plan that suits your needs.

I’m not eligible for government funding, can I still get home care services from Australian Unity?

Yes, absolutely.

At Australian Unity, you can purchase any of our homecare services privately, meaning you cover the cost from your own personal income, rather than with a government subsidy. We will discuss your needs and tailor a private care solution to your unique situation.

Whether you need a few hours per week of help around the house or medical nursing around the clock for a complex condition, we can tailor our services to meet your needs.

Private funding is a great flexible option, and you can start receiving care right away without needing to wait for external assessment or approval for more information, visit our Private home care services page.

What are my options if I need care urgently, but my Home Care Package/Support at Home funding isn’t available yet?

Temporary help may be available.

Australian Unity can assist if you are waiting for a Home Care Package or Support at Home funding to be allocated. 

Some options may include:

Purchasing home care services privately from Australian Unity. This can give you immediate support.
We can assist in applying for interim funding, such as the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP)

What happens if I’m having trouble paying my fees?

Support is available.

If you’re having money troubles, you can apply for financial hardship assistance through Centrelink (Services Australia). This assistance may help with covering the costs of the basic daily fee and/or income tested care fee if you are receiving home care services through government support. However, this is subject to an updated means test.
