Common Questions about Single Parents Health Insurance
Who can be included on Single Parent cover?
Whether it’s big kids or little kids, we offer a range of affordable options to help look after your family’s health. Single parent family cover includes one adult and their dependent children. Dependant children up to 23 are covered under our Single parent health cover at no extra cost. Once they turn 23, we can continue to cover them until they turn 31 if they are not married or living in a de facto relationship.
They can be covered as a student dependant while studying full-time, or, if they are not studying full-time, we can still cover them as a non-student dependant with an increase in premium. To find a cover that suits your family’s needs, click ‘Get a Quote’.
Who is considered a Dependant?
A Dependant is a:
- natural child (including newborns);
- legally adopted child
- stepchild;
- foster child;
What should I look for in Single parent health insurance cover?
It’s worth checking whether the policy includes additional benefits for your children—such as no excess or co-payments for hospital admissions for your dependants and school accident top-up benefits. Some extras have family annual limits, meaning the annual limit for some services is shared by everyone on the policy. Also, if your children are aged 23–30, whether they are studying full-time can affect your premium.
What’s the difference between Single parent and Family health insurance?
Can Single parent health insurance help avoid the Medicare Levy Surcharge?
Yes, it can. Any adult, including those on Single parent family cover, who holds at least a basic hospital policy (including our cheapest hospital cover) with an excess of $750 or less may be exempt from the surcharge. For more information, visit here.
I have a pre-existing health condition. Am I eligible for Single parent health cover?
Yes, you are. Australian Unity’s hospital covers include a 12-month waiting period for hospital treatment related to pre-existing conditions. This applies to new members previously uninsured, as well as those who join us with a gap of 31 or more days from their previous insurer, or those upgrading to a higher level of cover.
Go to pre-existing condition for further information. Our extras covers do not have waiting periods for pre-existing conditions, only the standard waiting periods as listed on the product’s Fact Sheet.
Can a married couple have different health insurance policies?
Yes, they can. Couples may choose to hold separate Single or Single parent policies instead of a joint Couple or Family policy—it all depends on what suits their individual needs best. To find a cover that suits your family’s needs, click ‘Get a Quote’.
I want to join Australian Unity – how do I switch from my current fund?
Switching to Australian Unity is simple and secure. All you need to do is call us on 1300 899 304 or sign up online and let us know you’re switching. We’ll handle the rest—with your permission, we’ll contact your previous fund to arrange cancellation and transfer your membership details so you don’t need to re-serve waiting periods or lose any Lifetime Health Cover status.
You’ll enjoy continuous cover, and if you change your mind within 30 days and haven’t made any claims, you can cancel and get your money back.
Can I update my cover if my family situation changes?
We understand that life changes and your cover should be able to change with it. That’s why we make it easy for you to switch between covers that better suit your lifestyle. Simply give us a call on 1800 760 719, and we’ll take care of the rest. It is important to contact us as soon as possible as we may not be able to process your request for an earlier date.
What steps should I take with my health insurance if I separate from my partner?
If you are on a Family Policy, you can remove them from your membership. Simply give us a call on 1800 760 719 to make this change. It’s important to contact us as we may not be able to process your request for an earlier date. It’s possible to remain on the same membership following a separation or divorce.
Please keep in mind that any claim payments will be paid into the account listed under the membership, regardless of who paid for the treatment. If any disputes arise we will keep the agreement with the person who holds authority over the membership. Unless advised otherwise, the spouse named on the membership will have automatic delegated authority.
Can Single Parents receive a government subsidy for health insurance?
Health insurance for Single parents is priced with affordability in mind. These policies are designed to provide quality cover for you and your children—often at a lower cost than standard family health insurance policies.
With all our policies, including Single Parents, you may be eligible for the Australian Government Private Health Insurance Rebate, where depending on your circumstances, the government will subsidise a portion of your health insurance premiums.
