“The approach is very practical and looks at implementing evidence-based self-help strategies. A coach will guide the client through seven sessions and provide support through the process.” – Carla Spyropoulos, Mindstep Coach for Remedy Healthcare.
The statistics around mental health in Australia show just how prevalent the issue is.
Annually, more than one million Australians will suffer from depressive issues, while more than double that will experience some levels of anxiety.
If you or someone you know have experienced these conditions, you’ll understand how devastating the effects on everyday life can be.
The success then, of the Mindstep mental health program is a positive step forward for people living with mental health and wellbeing issues.
The Mindstep program
Mindstep is a six-week phone-based program that empowers you to manage your depression and anxiety on your own terms and in the privacy of your own home. Delivered through our healthcare partner, Remedy Healthcare, it is based on a therapy called low intensity cognitive behavioural therapy, which looks at understanding your thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
Carla Spyropoulos, Mindstep Coach for Remedy Healthcare says, “The approach is very practical and looks at implementing evidence-based self-help strategies. A coach will guide the client through seven sessions and provide support through the process.”
Why it works
Carla says many Mindstep clients have acknowledged that this type of therapy has been helpful.
The Mindstep program is provided over the phone and can be tailored to different ages, genders and abilities.
“Mindstep breaks down barriers as it is phone-based,” Carla says. “Clients who live rurally or who cannot drive or access public transport can participate in the program from home.
“Therapy can be less confronting for clients when over the phone and they find that they can be more open. “
What kind of tools does the program give to patients?
Mindstep provides clients with practical tools; these will be sent in the form of a booklet and their coach will help them to fill in the booklet and implement the strategies.
The client then has the booklet and tools available in the future, should they notice a setback in how they are feeling.
“Clients come to Mindstep at an early diagnosis stage and are motivated to make change,” Carla says. “It can work well with other treatment that is already in place and it is structured so coaches can keep clients on track. The materials are not complicated or wordy and provide space for clients to take an active part in their own recovery.
“This program shows that short-term phone support can provide effective change in mental health symptoms. This could significantly change mental health support in Australia and globally.”
