The project has been 18 months in the works and led by mosaic artwork, Leanne Beyer. Each week for an hour, Leanne worked with a group of residents to help keep their minds and hands active.

The project also attracted community service students from Caulfied Grammar and Emmaus College who spent many afternoons interacting with residents as they worked together to complete the final mosaic panel.

General Manager, Joanne Hill, said the project was a wonderful way to stimulate people’s senses, provide an opportunity for interaction and improve confidence through artistic activities.

“We know that art in general enhances our quality of life. Seeing our high care residents participate in the activity and enjoy the creative process was a testament to the positive effect art has on people’s wellbeing,” Joanne Hill said.

What started as an initiative for high care residents quickly became a site-wide project with more residents inspired to express their artistic skills and get involved.

Residents who participated in the project said that the activity brought something new into the facility.

“It was great and I enjoyed the experience of working on something new,” a resident said.

“The activity offered something for everyone who took part. Staff saw a noticeable lift in people’s confidence seeing the artwork take shape.

“For others, it was a rewarding and fun experience shared with fellow residents in a supportive environment. Students on the other hand, got to know more about the residents as they explored the creative process together,” Joanne Hill explained.

Recognising the creative and social benefits of art, Victoria Grange plans to continue the mosaic art club and will open it to its Home Care clients.

Victoria Grange staff will be hosting an afternoon tea on Wednesday 10 June in honour of the residents and to celebrate the completion of the mosaic project.
