What if my circumstances change?

Our health cover is tailored to your different life stages, so if your needs change, simply call 13 29 39. Our Customer Service Team will find the cover most suited to your current needs and budget.

Or go to health cover and view our range for yourself.

Is my 22 year old dependant child still able to be covered under our family health cover?

Australian Unity covers dependant children (those not married or living in a de-facto relationship) up to the age of 23, even if they are working full time or living out of home. In fact, if they are still studying full-time or undertaking a trade apprenticeship, we’ll cover them up to the age of 25.

What happens if I am considering getting pregnant but am on a hospital cover which excludes pregnancy?

You should change your cover to a family version of one that includes pregnancy benefits, such as Comprehensive Hospital, LifeChoice Plus  or LifeChoice .*

*A 12 month waiting period applies for all services relating to pregnancy and childbirth.

What is the Medical Gap?

The government sets a schedule of fees for treatments by doctors in a hospital or day surgery, and Medicare covers you for 75% of this cost. Your private health cover then picks up the difference – the remaining 25%. However, some doctors and specialists charge more than the scheduled fee and that extra amount is The Medical Gap.

So what is Gap Cover?

Australian Unity’s Gap Cover* can reduce or remove your out-of-pocket expense. We set our own schedule of fees, which is generally higher than the government schedule. This means that when your doctor or specialist agrees to use Australian Unity’s Gap Cover Scheme, we can help pay some or all of the gap that can occur if your doctor’s charge is higher than the Medicare Schedule Fee.

Gap Cover is available to all doctors who treat patients in hospitals or day surgeries, but they don’t always have to participate. If a doctor participates but chooses to charge out-of-pocket-expenses, they must inform you of the extra amount in writing, before treating you.

You should always ask your doctor if they’ll be participating in the Australian Unity Gap Cover Scheme.

* Gap Cover is not available under Basic Hospital cover and Healthy Travel and does not apply to illnesses or conditions that are specifically excluded from some health covers.

What are Agreement Hospitals?

Most private hospitals and day facilities have agreements with Australian Unity, which guarantees that you’re covered for 100% of accommodation and most other services like theatre fees. (Of course, this doesn’t include any excess on your chosen cover.)

Do I need Ambulance cover or not?

Emergency Ambulance cover is included as part of your hospital cover with the exception of Basic Hospital Cover.

If you live in NSW or the ACT and decide against having Hospital cover, then you may decide to take out a separate Ambulance cover to pay the cost of non-emergency ambulance transport if you need to be taken to hospital.

In most other States, you can purchase Ambulance cover from your State Government Ambulance Scheme instead.

What is HICAPS and IBA HealthPoint?

HICAPS and IBA HealthPoint let you enjoy the convenience of easy, on the spot claiming when you visit a participating dentist, optometrist, physio, osteo, chiro or podiatrist.

HICAPS stands for the “Health Industry Claims and Payment Service”. It’s an electronic system that effectively lets you use your Membership Card to “pay” for a health service instead of using your own money and then submitting a claim.

IBA HealthPoint is a similar type of system, that also lodges claims directly with Australian Unity so that we can pay the provider for you immediately.

Numerous providers have these facilities. You simply swipe your membership card for instant claims processing, and then only pay the difference between the practitioner’s fee and your Australian Unity benefits.
